Jaigarh Fort Jaipur
|
| |
| This hill-top fortress was built by
Maharaja Jai Singh II in 1726. It is
among the few fortress of the medieval
India which are still preserved intact.
Within its rugged bastions are beautiful
palaces, well maintained gardens,
granary and a tall watch tower. But the
pride of Jaigarh is the ‘Jai Ban’
cannon, which is supposed to be the
largest cannon of its type in Asia. It
was built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh,
and has a 20ft. long barrel, while the
diameter of the wheels is 9 ft. For a
single shot form this monstrous cannon a
minimum of 100 kg. Gun powder is
required. |
| |
| The Jaigarh Fort is also famous for the
legendary tales associated with
treasures of Kachhawaha royal family
which were protected by the Mina tribe.
It is believed that the treasure still
lies hidden in the precincts of the
fort, while some say the treasure was
utilized by Jai Singh II in building his
dream city,
Jaipur. |
