Hawa
Mahal or the ‘Palace of Winds’ was built
in 1799 by the poet king Sawai Pratap
Singh for the royal ladies to enjoy the
procession and day to day activities
from the coll confinement of
this majestic façade. Today, it has
become the hallmark of the ‘Pink City’
and is the most recognizable
photographed monument of
Jaipur. This
five storied stunning semi-octagonal
monument resembles the crown of Lord
couplets suggests that the magnificent
edifice was dedicated to Radha and Lord
Krishna. This gently tapering structure
is much more than a façade, it is a
fantasy in pink sandstone, with
elaborate and fanciful screens with
overhanging latticed balconies,
curvilinear roofs, domes and spires.
Located at Sireh Deori Bazar, the palace
is a part of the
City Palace complex and
can be entered thorough an archway
towards the rear of the building. It
also houses a museum exhibiting a fine
collection of ancient paintings,
sculpture, handicrafts, coins, armory
etc.
The Hawa Mahal museum was setup in 1983,
in Pratap Mandir adjoining to the Hawa
Mahal. It houses rich collection of
sculptural heritage from Ganeshwar,
Virat Nagar, Raid Samhar and Nagar. |
