City
Palace Jaipur
|
| |
|
The palace complex is located in the
heart of Jaipur, occupying about
one-seventh of the old city area. It was
built between 1729 and 1732 by Sawai Jai
Singh and subsequently various
structures were added to it by his
successors. It is popularly referred as
the City Palace to differentiate it from
the ancient
Amber Palace or the
neo-modern
Rambagh Palace. Unlike other Rajput palace. The fortifications are
separate from the structure, while most
of the other buildings are part of one
integrated structure. The palace complex
can be reached from Sireh Deori Bazar
through Chandi Ki Taksal which leads
towards Jaleb Chowk. From here, one may
proceed either through ‘Ganesh Pol’ or
“Virendra Pol’, also known as Gainda Ki
Deorhi (rhinoceros gate). The Ganesh Pol
leads towards
Diwan-e-Aam and
Diwane-e-Khas, while entering thourgh
Virendra Pol you are faced directly
towards the majestic
Mubarak Mahal. The
Tripolia Gate facing the Chaura Rasta is
reserved exclusively for the royal
family and their guests.

| The complex is
surrounded by a high wall and is divided
into a series of courtyards, gardens and
other buildings. It is a splendid fusion
of Rajput and Mughal styles of
architecture. The magnificent
Chandra Mahal, occupies the centre stage and is
still the residence of erstwhile ruling
family. The outer courtyards have
architectural beauties like
Mubarak
Mahal, Sarvatobhadra, Diwana Khana and
Pritam Niwas. These have been converted
into a museum known as the Maharaja
Sawai Man Singh II Museum. The palace
was opened for public viewing in 1950’s
and it still retains the pomp and
splendor of the the bygone era. The
exhibits and interior designs coupled
with richly decorated doors and gateways
guarded by sentinels decked in full
royal livery provide an unique
opportunity to view the royal legacy of
the Kacchawahas. |
